According to figures released by the PSNI after an FOI request, there were two instances where 12-year-olds were caught with the offensive weapons.

Among the other weapons discovered were blades, knives, chisels and saws.

There were a total of 17 incidents in the past three years where young pupils were dealt with after bringing a weapon onto school grounds.

In two cases, the person who had brought a weapon to school couldn't be identified.

Those involved ranged from 12-16 in age and the majority who had a crime recorded against them were dealt with through the Justice Departments Youth Conferencing system.
