Dozens of NI locals make Queen's New Year Honours list

Achievements in health, politics, sport and education are among those getting the Royal nod.

Northern Ireland natives have been honoured by the Queen in the New year’s Honours List.

This year’s list sees locals recognised for contribution to the war on covid, to sport, to politics and much more.

Notably, multiple health workers are mentioned after working tirelessly during the pandemic.

Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health Richard Pengelly said he is absolutely thrilled to be made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.

85-year-old Jimmy Chapman, a porter at Lisburn Health Centre receives a British Empire Medal (BEM), and Wendy Anderson, a respiratory consultant at the Northern Trust, is made an MBE.

Sean McCarry, regional commander for the Community Rescue Service in Northern Ireland, is made an OBE.

The first unionist politician ever elected to the Irish Seanad has been made an OBE.

Ian Marshall, 65, has been recognised for his public and political service.

The former senator and president of the Ulster Farmers' Union said he was "completely blindsided" when he received the notification of the honour.

Victims campaigner Kenny Donaldson is made an MBE - he has dedicated to all innocent victims of terrorism.

One of Northern Ireland's best-known communications has made the list for her service to the public relations industry.

Jane Wells, 64, is a managing director at JComms and has advised many leading companies, businesspeople, and public sector bodies, as well as managing a host of major business and public events.

In sport, locals have been honoured too.

Boxing coach Paul Johnston is made an MBE for his work as a mentor to hundreds of young people, and Fred Magee, club secretary for Harland & Wolff Harriers, also becomes an MBE.
