A Ballybofey farmer is still in shock having sold a ram for €44,000 (£37,445) at the Blessington Mart in Wicklow.

This mammoth figure has taken the record for the largest amount ever paid for a male sheep at a sale in Ireland.

The largest amount previously bought at a market was €38,000.

The sale sparked a bidding war amongst farmers, as everyone knew this particular ram was from a good line.

The seven-month-old Suffolk ram was sold to a consortium led by Dennis Taylor, a farmer from Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

Suffolk sheep are one of the most popular breeds across Northern Ireland. It was originally developed in England as the result of crossing Southdown rams on Norfolk Horned ewes.

The result of this cross was an improvement over both parent sheep breeds.

Known commonly for its black legs and face, it's a breed raised mainly for meat and wool production.
