Warning to parents after schoolgirl grabbed in suspicious approach

A school in Bangor has urged parents to discuss personal safety with their children after a schoolgirl was approached in the town.

The incident happened around 8.35 on Thursday morning in the Hill Crest area .

The girl's mother posted about the incident on facebook. She said her daghiter was walking her usual route to school "over the Valentine Playing Fields when she was grabbed by a 40-ish year old man in a dark black or green hoody" which was up over his head.

The distraught mother said her daughter was able to shake him off and run home but was very upset.

This afternoon the school issued a statement online, urging parents to report suspicious activity.

In a statement a Police spokesperson said they are appealing for information.

"At approximately 8.35am on Thursday 1st June, police received the report of a suspicious approach in the Hill Crest area of Bangor.

"Enquires into this report are currently ongoing.

"Police in the Bangor area would ask anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact Newtownards Police Station on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 217 of the 01/06/17. Or, alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
