The Portadown campus of Craigavon Senior High School has had to shut after a spike in covid cases among pupils.

The school said it was a temporary closure.

It is understood a "large" number of positive cases were identified after testing.

They will now begin a period of self-isolation as will all of the close contacts of those who have tested positive.

From today (Monday) the students will be taught remotely.

The Lurgan campus will remain open but in a statement to Downtown Radio & Cool FM this morning, Ruth Harkness, Principal, Craigavon Senior High School said a group of pupils from the site, who had "shared provision with some Portadown students" would also be working remotely.

A mobile testing unit attended the school for the last few days.

Ms Harkness said: "Following testing, a number of positive cases have been identified and these individuals are required to self-isolate for 10 days. All close contacts of positive cases will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

“Due to the complexity of this situation and following PHA advice, the school, in conjunction with the Education Authority has decided to make a temporary move to remote learning. This will allow teaching of pupils to continue in a safe environment.”

And she added that the school was "mindful of the impact this decision will have."

"It is not a decision we make lightly but it is important that we ascertain the current situation around the cluster of cases to begin with, with the support of the PHA we can then decide on the best way forward," she said.

"We will keep pupils and parents updated as soon as we have any further information to share.

“I would like to acknowledge the dedication of our staff, teaching and non-teaching, who work tirelessly to support all CSHS pupils and know they will do everything they can to ensure a seamless and successful transition to remote learning while it is required."

Speaking on the issue Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart said, “Firstly my thoughts are with those who have contracted the virus.

"I trust everyone will make a full recovery.

"I have been in constant communication with the principal, the Minister of Education and many concerned parents.

"It became apparent throughout last week that there was a spike in cases within the school.

"The principal and staff quickly moved to engage the PHA (Public Health Agency) and schedule the mobile testing unit for Saturday and Sunday. As a result of the significant number of students and staff tested a large number of positive cases have been identified and as a result the school have taken the decision to engage in remote learning over the next two weeks.

"I would encourage everyone to adhere to the rules and isolate accordingly including those family members who have had direct contact with those who have tested positive."

"I want to commend the school for their swift actions in trying to get this outbreak under control. Whilst I know parents are concerned it is important that everyone remains calm and continues to adhere to the advice. Wash hands, ensure social distancing, wear a mask, get tested if you have symptoms and isolate if you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive."

Craigavon Senior High has around 600 Year 11 and 12 pupils who are taught over two campuses - Portadown and Lurgan.

The majority are based in Portadown and it is believed the Lurgan campus is not affected.
