Belfast’s Oisín McVicker is about to take on the toughest physical and mental challenge of his life – ‘My Everest’.

Last Christmas he took on the ‘Cycle Climb Cycle’ challenge, raising much-needed funds for his local community. And this year is going even bigger… 29,031.69 feet bigger.

This weekend, Oisín will be climbing 25 laps of Cave Hill Country Park; the equivalent height of Mount Everest.

We caught up with Oisín ahead of this weekend’s challenge. “Last year’s challenge was unreal. It was a physical and mental battle to get through it but with the help of my support team and donations from far and wide, I managed to get back on the bike after completing the seven peaks and got myself back to Belfast!”

Oisín, who previously worked as a teacher, has started his own company Gaelfit Ltd. Fitness is a passion of his; “I regularly walk my dog Luna up Cave Hill. A couple of weeks ago I did 6 laps all in one go to get a gauge of the timing for my challenge.”

Supporting The North Belfast Community Foodbank once again, over 17 local community groups and schools will benefit from funds raising.

“This isn’t just in our own community locally, but province wide,” explains Oisín.

“Families are choosing between heating their homes and putting food on the table which isn’t ideal at any time of the year, but even more so at Christmas when families are trying to make this a special time for their children.

Starting this Friday (2nd December) at 12am Oisín will be walking the 368m high Cave Hill 25 times, finishing around 8pm on Saturday 3rd December.

“The support of my friends, family, the wider community and everyone coming along to take part will keep me moving. Seeing the donations rise as I progress, always adds an extra bit of motivation, as it reminds me why I am doing this in the first place.”

How to donate to Oisín’s ‘My Everest’ Challenge:

“All donations are greatly received, however if you are not in a position to donate, all shares of my social media posts are very much appreciated as this will help to raise the profile of the event and the great cause at the heart of it. If any of your listeners/followers want to join me on the route they are more than welcome to do so. Information about timing of laps can be found on my social media pages and these will commence at midnight on Friday 2nd December. There will be night laps and day laps (plenty of choice of both)”

GOOD LUCK OISÍN!
