A video that appears to mock the death of tragic newly-wed Michaela McAreavey has been slammed as “disgusting”.

It shows dozens chanting, seemingly inside an Orange Lodge, about the murder of Mickey Harte’s daughter in Mauritius in 2011.

Popular Tyrone teacher was strangled by an intruder in her hotel room when she walked in alone and disturbed a burglary.

Dozens of singers are clapping and some throw their heads back in laughter as they join in the chant, with Union Flag bunting in the background. It is believed to have taken place during Centenary Celebrations.

The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland says an investigation has been launched, and that if anyone involved is found to be a member, they will face disciplinary proceedings.

The statement said: “The video currently circulating on social media relating to the murder of Michaela McAreavey is utterly abhorrent and the Orange Institution condemns the content without reservation. The behaviour of those involved and their actions have no place in our society and certainly do not reflect the ethos of our organisation.

“The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has instigated an inquiry into the incident and if any of those involved are found to be members of the Institution, they will face disciplinary proceedings.”

Meanwhile, a PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are aware of the video posted online and are examining the content to determine if any offences may have been committed."

There has been much backlash from politicians across the spectrum.

TUV leader Jim Allister said it is "beyond disgusting".

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill says she has spoken to John McAreavey, and that love will conquer hate.

Sinn Fein Mid Ulster MLA Lindon Dillon said the video was an act of "hatred".

DUP MLA Jonathan Buckley said: "This is wrong on so many levels.

"I remember the utter devastation felt by all following the tragic killing of Michaela McAreavey.

"My thoughts are with the McAreavey and Harte family circles and I condemn this vile video."

The Ulster Unionist Party leader Doug Beattie said those responsible do not act in his name.

"I am sickened by the video of a centenary event being used to mock the murder of Michaela McAreavey. It is absolutely abhorrent, disgusting and shameful," he said.

"Those involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves as should those who sat, listened and cheered. This must be investigated by the PSNI and also the Orange Order with action being taken against any of those responsible.

“My thoughts are with the Harte and McAreavey families who should never ever have to put up with such sickening behaviour. I can assure them this is a minority and the overwhelming majority of Unionists will find this as deeply disgusting as I do."

UUP Party colleague Robbie Butler said he is "appalled".

Kate Nicoll, Alliance MLA and former Belfast Lord Mayor, said it is disturbing that the words to the son were so widely known by those in the room

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty wrote on social media: "Fist pumping, table banging, clapping, laughing, jeering - singing a song about the shocking murder of one of the most beautiful people you could ever meet.

"It's so sick and shameful. Thinking about the Harte family who've been so strong and dignified. They do not deserve this."

We have asked the PSNI and the Orange Order of a response.
