An Irish Goodbye wins Oscar for Short Film
A birthday and an Oscar all in one day 🎂 🏆

An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, won big at the 2023 Oscar Awards last night in LA.
Picking up Best Live Action Short Film, there was fierce competition in that category, going up against Disney’s Le Pupille, the New Yorker Studios’ Night Ride; Cyrus Neshvad’s The Red Suitcase; and Ivalu from Anders Walter and Rebecca Pruzan.
Filmed entirely in Northern Ireland, An Irish Goodbye, is a black comedy about the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough and Lorcan following the untimely death of their mother.
“Thank you to the Academy and to everyone back in Northern Ireland, we wish we could list you all” said Co-Director Ross White (27) as they took to the stage.
Tom Berkeley jumped in to add: “There’s something very important I’d like to speak about as well. This award is actually the second-most-important thing about today, because it’s this man’s birthday.”
He then gestured towards the film's star James Martin, who celebrated turning 31. The pair then asked the star-studded line-up to join them in singing Happy Birthday.

Last night's success makes this 'two for two' as Northern Ireland has two Oscars in row to its name.
Sir Kenneth Branagh's Belfast won the Best Original Screenplay' award in 2022.
