350 parking tickets being handed out every day in NI
Latest figures from the Department of Infrastructure show up to £2.8m worth of fines were handed out between April and June.
Around 350 parking tickets are being issued every day in Northern Ireland and Stormont could be making millions of pounds as a result.
In the last three months, more than 32,000 parking tickets were handed out.
If the fines were paid within 28 days at a rate of £45 then a total of £1.4m could have been recovered by the Department of Infrastructure. But at the standard rate of £90, that figure would rise to £2.8m.
Most fines were in connection with on-street parking with 10,000 tickets issued in Belfast alone.
Drivers also continue to be caught out by bus lanes in the city - with more than 5,000 offences. More than a third of those occurred on Donegall Square East. Those fines could have netted the department over £460k.
During April to June 2017:
- On-street parking: 22,991 PCNs were issued in Northern Ireland of which just over two-fifths (43%) were issued in Belfast.
- Off-street parking: 9,090 PCNs were issued in Northern Ireland. This ranged from a high of 1,204 (13%) in Fermanagh and Omagh Council to a low of 199 (2%) in Antrim and Newtownabbey Council.
- Bus lanes and bus-only streets: 5,188 PCNs were issued for moving traffic offences in Greater Belfast. More than a third (36%) of these contraventions occurred on Donegall Square East, just under a fifth (18%) on Great Victoria Street and a further 17% on College Square East
