5 Takeaways to Tackle Plastic Pollution in Northern Ireland
It's important to stay safe during COVID-19, but even during the pandemic there are lots of ways we can still be making a difference

- Refuse single-use plastics (SUPs). This is the most effective way to make a positive impact. As consumers, we’re presented with so many SUP options on a daily basis. Did you really need another plastic bag when you were at the shops? Did you really need to take that plastic straw at the bar? Change your daily habits by refusing SUP where you can.
- Promote Reusables. Reusable cups are becoming ever more popular and with good reason. Not only does it save the amount of pointless plastic takeaway cups, but many coffee chains offer discounts on your favourite beverages if you bring your own cup.
- Support local shops ‘doing good’. Many businesses in NI are beginning to offer packaging free options to bulk buy everything from shampoo to seeds, pasta to pulses. Check out the Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful website for a handy reference guide for shops in your area.
- Reconsider your Recycling. Recycling is great, but it’s confusing at times. Some SUPs can be recycled (like plastic drinks bottles) and some cannot (like plastic film). The only way to know for sure is to check the item. On top of that, different Councils will have different regulations for what can be accepted as recycling. Make life easier for yourself; refuse SUP where you can.
- Motivate Family and Friends. It’s not easy doing things by yourself. Talk to people in your life who would be interested in making these changes with you. By making a Plastic Promise, you’ll also keep receiving support from our team to motivate you.
