After both going through a divorce, Shelley and Wayne signed up to online dating hoping to meet someone new. Here’s what happened…
Shelley: “I had recently separated from my husband of 13 years, and at 42 I was a little cynical on romance! When I saw Wayne’s advert, I really felt like he was to the point and not full of rubbish i.e. no false promises etc. I liked his photo so decided to send him a message. At the same time I added him to my favourites and sent a wink. I didn’t know he was sat at home on his computer watching this all come in at the same time. He thought I sounded keen, checked out my profile and sent me his mobile with a message to call him! I was so nervous!!
I called him that evening and we spoke on the phone for about 2 hours, it was so easy speaking to each other, no uncomfortable silences! We arranged to meet for a meal…
I was waiting outside of the pub for him and as I was watching this lovely looking man get out of his truck, wishing it was him, my mobile rang and it was him! We introduced ourselves and there was an immediate spark for me (he was a bit of a cool cucumber – so I didn’t know until after he felt the same.)
What attracted me to him was his openness and honesty and his ability to talk about so many things and not just himself. He is very intelligent and interesting and we just gelled from the start. We had the same interests in music, food, most things actually. He asked if I was busy the following evening and invited me to his place where he cooked, (he is an amazing cook!) We chatted and chatted all night long, it was wonderful and we shared our first kiss that evening - it was toe curling and it just felt so right!
He came over to mine the following evening and except for that Sunday night, we have not spent a night apart since January 2011. It was love at first sight and it just keeps growing and growing and getting stronger. We have built our life together, now owning 2 Companies together, 3 dogs, 3 cats and our 4 kids get along brilliantly. We work together, play golf, play guitar (he is superb at it) and we love cooking together, we fit in every-way. The testament to our relationship is that we have had some pretty hard times but our strength and open honesty gets us through anything.
This special relationship was cemented when Wayne proposed to me this year on my birthday whilst we were in Gran Canaria. He made me the happiest woman alive. We have many plans for the future but we prefer to live day by day. I had cancer years ago and I learned to wake up and enjoy each day as it comes and not to think too far ahead.
What would we tell others searching online? Not to give up and do not settle for something that’s not quite right. With age comes wisdom, and when it’s right it should smack you straight in the face but most of all be honest about the good and the bad and don’t hold anything back.”
