The Takeshi's Castle reboot has officially landed

Legendary Japanese gameshow Takeshi's Castle is getting a UK reboot for Amazon Prime Video, with comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis providing the commentary for the brutal, yet hilarious challenges.

Available on Prime now for UK and Ireland members, the contestants try their best with the physical challenges in an attempt to reach Takeshi's Castle and win the prize of 1 million yen.

In a joint statement, Romesh and Tom said: "Nothing is more magical than a reboot of a successful show from yesteryear, heavy though is the pressure in bringing back the wonder that is Takeshi’s Castle.

"We are honoured to be bringing back the maddest show of all time to a whole new generation; hopefully they can take away the life lessons we learnt from the original."

Prime Video's head of originals, Dan Grabiner, later added: "Takeshi's Castle has a special place in the hearts of UK viewers, and Tom and Romesh's ingenious new take on the show makes it as incomprehensible as ever, and very, very funny."

The new series was filmed at the same place as the original show, at Midoriyama Studio in Japan, where over 300 contestants were picked from over 1000 applicants last year.

The original version of Takeshi's Castle, which first aired in Tokyo between 1986 and 1990, saw comedian Takeshi Kitano set up challenging obstacles in order to 'protect' his castle from contestants, always known as 'the army'.

Challenges included Barrier of the Border, Wall to Freedom Becomes Far, Devil's Domain, Heaven and Hell, The Longest Yard, Man Eating Holes and Ball Run.

Following the show's success in Japan, the series became a huge hit around the world, as well as inspiring a number of other popular game shows.

Takeshi's Castle is available now on Prime Video for users in UK and Ireland.
