NTA viewers in shock over the winner of Best Presenter
Ant and Dec have won it 18 years in a row!
Last updated 23rd Jan 2019
The National Television Awards are some of the most popular in British culture, and tonight saw the 2019 ceremony take place at London's O2 Arena. The 24th awards, hosted by Dermot O'Leary, has been an event full of twists and turns - and a splendid performance from Westlife to boot.
Whilst there are quite a few big awards that always make headlines year after year - like Best Serial Drama, where the four main soaps compete to win - but the one most people are keen to hear about is for Best TV Presenter.
In what is a record number of consecutive wins, Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly have so far taken home the gong a whopping 17 times in a row - always beating the likes of This Morning's Holly Willoughby and her co-host, Phillip Schofield.
However, after Ant McPartlin's well-documented struggles with addictions to prescription painkillers and alcohol throughout the last 18 months, he decided to step away from the limelight early last year to focus on his recovery.
This meant that he did not co-host last year's series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, breaking a 15-year tradition of Ant & Dec fronting the show. Their colleague and friend Holly Willoughby, was able to step in, and her performance on the show went down very well with viewers, and some even called to make her a permanent addition to the show.
However, this year, Ant & Dec have pulled it out of the bag once again, and have scooped the award for Best Presenter at the 2019 National Television Awards!
Going live to the recording of Britain's Got Talent where the duo were, they teared up as they accepted the award. Ant said that he felt he shouldn't accept the award, and said that the win was all down to Dec's hard work throughout the year.
Viewers of the show couldn't believe it, and took to Twitter to share their utter shock at the events. One wrote, 'Well done guys. Lovely comment from Ant and rightly so. Dec was amazing last year. But it’s lovely to have the boys back together now.'
