The highly anticipated third series of Derry Girls started last night (Tuesday 12th April) and as well as all the usual antics from our favourite Northern Irish teenagers, we were treated to a cameo from a HUGE star!

The first episode of the new series saw the familiar faces of Saorise-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn, as well as an appearance from THE Liam Neeson.

Fans of the show were blown away when they saw the Hollywood star make an appearance as a police officer in the first episode back.

This comes after the cast had teased that there would be some 'major guest stars' appearing in the series. Louisa Harland, who plays Orla McCool, said: "I think people are going to lose their minds when they see who," and she wasn't kidding!

Watch Liam Neeson in Derry Girls:

The 69-year-old actor has appeared in countless blockbusters including the Taken and Star Wars franchises. In Derry Girls he appears as a police officer questioning the girls (and the wee English fella) about a break-in at their school.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to share their shock at seeing the familiar face, one said: 'Keeping Liam Neeson's guest appearance under wraps for this must have been the best kept secret in Derry...', while another commented: 'This was an absolutely brilliant surprise! Love love love this show', and another added: 'they've only gone and got Liam Neeson'.

People were full of praise for the first episode, with one fan saying: 'what a start to the series, absolutely brilliant 😂😂' and another viewer adding: 'Liam Neeson's cameo in #DerryGirls was the best surprise ever! Absolutely ❤️ this show. The 90s soundtrack is everything 🎵🎶''.

The scene with Liam Neeson also features the return Uncle Colm, who the girls cleverly brought in to talk endlessly at the police officer and bore him into letting them leave. For many fans, it was good old Colm who stole the show, with comments like: 'Liam Neeson was a fun addition but when I tell yous I shrieked at Uncle Colm' popping up on social media.

It didn't take long for the memes to start appearing either, mostly commenting on the hilarity of the Uncle Colm vs Liam Neeson showdown.

We can't wait to see what happens next in the final series of Derry Girls!
