Bad news for Coronation Street fans this afternoon as it's been confirmed the ITV soap has suspended filming.

Despite certain rumours that filming has come to a halt due to a COVID-19 outbreak on set, ITV bosses have dismissed this claim, admitting it is to allow production staff to rewrite certain storylines due to recent consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson for ITV said, "Coronation Street will pause filming from next Monday, 25 January for two weeks to undertake some rewriting of stories and scripts as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We will also be taking the opportunity to review all health and safety requirements to ensure we continue to provide a safe working environment for the cast, crew and production team.

This pause in filming won't affect our ability to deliver six episodes of Coronation Street each week."

As well as Corrie, filming on Emmerdale has also been stopped this week, with filming in the Dales resuming on Monday 25th January.

Meanwhile, Corrie filming will be postponed for two weeks starting on Monday, with the cast expected to return to work in early February.

It's understood current episodes of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale will air as normal on ITV next week.

All of the UK's soaps, including Corrie, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and EastEnders all stopped filming back in March 2020, when the UK was plunged into a first lockdown.

In order to make previously recorded episodes last, bosses were forced to cut down the amount of episodes per week, with EastEnders even making 20 minute episodes, instead of the usual 30.
