Today, popular TV soap Coronation Street have unveiled a new larger set including an expanded Victoria Street. For years the area surrounding the iconic terraced houses, Rovers Return, corner shop, cafe and newsagents has existed only in the viewers’ imagination. However, very soon, life beyond the cobbles of Britain’s most famous street will be visible to viewers.

A brand new retail area has been completed including shops, eateries, an urban garden, Weatherfield North tram stop and a police station have even been built.

The new set even includes a specially commissioned, mosaic covered memorial bench will have pride of place in the urban garden. This bench is in memory of Coronation Street superfan Martyn Hett, and all those who lost their lives in the Manchester Arena bomb in May 2017.

Earlier today Kym Marsh gave viewers a sneak peak of the new set on Good Morning Britain telling viewers that even "a lot of the cast haven't seen it yet."

In 2013 the set moved from its old location on Quay Street in Manchester to Salford Quays, however in a nod to the previous 'home', the road on the new set is made from cobbles reclaimed from the old site.

Now that the show has three double episodes a week this new set allows for more filming options at the current Trafford Wharf Road site in Salford. It also means that there is more opportunity for product placement deals such as Costa Coffee and a Co-op, as we reported on earlier this year.

Speaking about the new extended set the series producer Kate Oates said, “The Victoria Street extension represents an exciting chapter in Corrie history: an amazing new stage, full of dramatic potential. Our amazingly talented design team have created everything from scratch - but it still manages to have the feeling of always having been there, just around the corner.”

The new set will be seen on-screen from the 20th April 2018. Coronation Street continues on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
