Midwives from the Royal Jubilee Maternity Service in Belfast are set to star in new television series.

Belfast Midwives is a new 5 part docuseries on Channel 4 and begins on tonight at 10pm. It will also be available as a boxset on All 4.

The series follows the team of midwives at the award-winning Royal Jubilee Maternity Service in the heart of Belfast, one of Northern Ireland’s busiest maternity units delivering 5,000 babies every year.

Full of warmth, humour and emotion, this is the midwives’ story told in their own words. All births are unique and unpredictable, and this emotional series captures the drama of a broad range of births and families welcoming a new baby into their lives.

Each episode features three very different birth stories – from emergency C-sections to extraordinary water births - we follow the midwives supporting a diverse cast of families during this important life moment.

We also meet midwives in other departments helping couples who’ve been struggling to start a family for years as they get to see their new baby for the first time and in the post-natal wards where new mothers may need extra support to look after their newborn babies or get to grips with breastfeeding.

In the first episode of the series we meet three couples on the brink of welcoming a new baby into their family. Mum Sindhura and her husband Harish moved to Belfast from India where they had their first child.

Supported by midwife Deirbhile, this is the first time Harish has been allowed to attend the birth of his baby. Seasoned midwife Naomi loves working in theatre, supporting mums through c-sections. This is Nikita and James’ fourth pregnancy but the couple sadly lost a previous baby at 24 weeks.

They have opted for an elective C-section – but James is squeamish and prone to fainting. Will he make it through the birth to cut the umbilical cord? Ashley wants a waterbirth and husband Kyle wants a son. Will they both get what they want? Midwife Aimee is on hand to help.

The series was filmed during summer 2022 and produced by Lion TV, an award winning television production company, for Channel 4.

Brenda Kelly, Head of Midwifery at Belfast Trust said, “Being a Midwife is an incredible privilege. We are with women and families throughout their pregnancy, during labour and when they meet their precious new baby.

“Here in Belfast Trust we have an amazing team of highly skilled and caring midwifes and I’m very proud of them all. Filming Belfast Midwives was a great opportunity to celebrate the important role of midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team who are dedicated to delivering great maternity care. It’s a great series which makes me so proud to be a midwife in this team”.

More than 5,000 babies are delivered in the Royal Jubilee Maternity Service every year. Belfast Trust’s maternity service provides obstetric and midwifery antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care. A new state of the art Maternity Hospital is currently being build beside the existing maternity hospital and will open in 2023.
