Emily In Paris writer Deborah Copaken has spoken out via Twitter following fan outrage at hit BBC show I May Destroy You not receiving any Golden Globes nominations.

The nominations were released yesterday (4th February 2021) with fans left shocked at I May Destroy You not receiving any nominations.

Popular Netflix show Emily In Paris received two nominations, one for Best TV Musical, and another for Best Actress (Lily Collins).

After the nominations took place, Emily In Paris writer, Deborah Copaken, said, 'I was a writer on Emily in Paris, but your show was my favorite show since the dawn of TV, & this is just wrong. I loved I MAY DESTROY YOU, and I thank you, personally, for giving us your heart, your mind, your resilience, & your humour'. (sic)

She went on to say in an interview with the Guardian, "That show, I told everyone who would listen, deserves to win all the awards. When it didn't, I was stunned. I May Destroy You was not only my favourite show of 2020. It's my favourite show ever".

The writer also went on to open up about her personal experience, "It takes the complicated issue of a rape - I'm a sexual assault survivor myself - and infuses it with heart, humour, pathos and a story constructed so well, I had to watch it twice, just to understand how Coel did it."

This testament alone highlights the importance of I May Destroy You. With many fans in agreement, they have shared their own testaments about what I May Destroy You means to them.

The Globe Globe announcements immediately sparked outrage amongst fans. The news quickly circulated on social media, into posts, story shares and even turned into memes.

One fan of the show said, 'No it’s actually CRIMINAL to not recognize Michaela Coel for what she did, not just w trauma or sexual assault or consent, but w friendship and art and power and healing! I May Destroy You was an artist executing a singular vision, pure and focused #GoldenGlobes'. (sic)

Farrah Khan said, via Twitter, 'I May Destroy You is a thoughtful, gut-twisting, smart, and trauma-informed exploration of the impact of sexual violence. One of the best shows I have seen. Michaela Coel, the writer, co-director AND executive producer deserves all the flowers. What a huge miss #GoldenGlobes'. (sic)

I May Destroy You is the hit show from Michaela Coel, in which she stars in, directs and writes. The show takes Michaela's own trauma of sexual assault and expresses it against a backdrop of working class London.

Hailed as a portrayal of black britishness, I May Destroy You explores themes of friendship, love, family and consent. Michaela's storytelling is so intricate as she does so in an updated, witty way with fast-moving scenes, characters and storylines. Whilst also playing the main character of Arabella for good measure!

Emily In Paris is a Netflix series following the life of Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) as she moves to Paris to work in the fashion industry. With all the glamour that comes with a Parisian landscape, fashion job and exciting love life, the show is a must-watch!

With both shows receiving great critical acclaim, it is great to see the Emily In Paris writer speaking out to use her voice in solidarity.
