One Direction Are Boosting Trust in the UK - John Major
The former British Prime Minister heaps praise on the boys
Former British PM Sir John Major claims that One Direction have such power across the globe they are helping increase trust in British diplomacy.
The 70-year-old, who was in Downing Street from 1990 to 1997, told a parliamentary committee that internationally successful music artists are helping boost the UK’s “soft power.”
Claiming the UK is in a unique cultural position, Sir John also heaped praise on Adele, Susan Boyle, TV show Downtown Abbey and Premier League football.
Sir John said: "We've had over 20 British albums top the charts in countries around the world. It's not just the established stars like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
"You have Adele, One Direction, Susan Boyle. Wherever you go, they're household names and they have an implication for perception and thus soft power."
He added: "That is a background that few countries can match in terms of profile and that is important for our diplomacy."
He added: "Because people see and think about Britain, because of these elements of soft power, and because of our history, there is...a greater tendency to trust the British in diplomacy".
What next?! David Cameron is a fan of Little Mix and Neon Jungle?!
