Mariah Carey’s festive classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ is set to smash the 1million sales barrier almost two decades after its release.

The Christmas anthem’s UK sales now stand at 985,700 units having sold a further 56,000 copies this year alone, according to the Official Charts Company.

If downloads continue at the current trajectory, the song should reach a colossal 1million sales this week making it the 142nd track in UK history to reach the sales landmark.

On its initial release in December 1994, ‘All I Want For Christmas’ initially reached number five on the chart but climbed to no.2 a week later where it was held from the top spot by East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’.

After clocking up a respectable tally of 306,000 copies in its first chart run, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ reached number eight the following year but didn’t appear on the charts again until the advent of digital downloading.

Since 2007, the song has appeared on the chart every year steadily picking up more than two times its original sales tally.
