Justin Bieber has become the first human being to hit the 40million followers landmark on Twitter.

Immediately after reaching the impressive figure, Justin tweeted: “#40MillionBeliebers - thank u. i love u. #grateful #40MillionStrong”

He then posted a screenshot of his profile the day after he joined the social networking site in September 2009 when he had a measly 40 followers.

Justin overtook Lady Gaga to become the most popular person on Twitter back in January when he notched a new high of 33,315,521 followers to Gaga's 33,315,459.

Congratulating the Canadian teenager, the ever gracious Gaga said: “So proud of @justinbieber and all the Beliebers! I'm only happy to see your fans growing in size, you all deserve it! Monsters support you!”

Justin responded: “@ladygaga thank u for the kind words”

Currently putting the finishing touches to her third album ‘ARTPOP’, Gaga has only tweeted nine times in the past three months. The record is scheduled for release later this year.

On Monday Justin announced he will be releasing a brand new single called 'Heartbreaker' soon.
