The director of Contagion has hinted he's working on a sequel 😱
The 2011 film has some striking similarities to the 2020 pandemic
Although it was released almost 10 years ago, Stephen Soderbergh's thriller Contagion, starring the likes of Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, has been thrown back into the spotlight over the last 12 months, due to the striking similarities it has to the current worldwide pandemic.
The movie, which follows the spread of a deadly virus transmitted by respiratory droplets and fomites, has been compared the current Coronavirus pandemic, which has caused tragedy and mayhem across the world in 2020.
Now, as the nation continues to isolate in an attempt to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, the movie's creator has hinted a sequel to Contagion could be in the works.
Speaking about the movie on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stephen Soderbergh teased a 'philosophical sequel' could be on the way.
He said, “I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion, but in a different context.
“You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired, but very different hair colours. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ We have been working on that; we should probably hot-foot it a little bit.”
Contagion, which first hit cinemas back in 2011, aired on ITV in the middle of lockdown back in March, with the movie also being available on Netflix.
With such similarities, viewers were quick to express their shock online. One viewer wrote on Twitter, 'I've just watched "Contagion" 2011, it was like watching 2020 in progress. Almost like a blueprint for the epidemic made 9 years ago.' (sic)
Another added, 'Its scary how accurate Contagion is to 2020', with a third writing, 'The movie contagion filmed back in 2011 is a very telling movie of where we are at with Covid-19 in 2020'. (sic)
Contagion writer Scott Z. Burns has previously spoken about the movie's spinetingling similarities to the Coronavirus pandemic, admitting he doesn't find it surprising.
Speaking to Slate earlier this year, he said, "It has been very strange to me, whether on social media or in conversations with friends, that people will say to me, ‘This is uncanny how similar it is.’ And I don’t find it to be that surprising, because the scientists I spoke to, and there were a lot of them, all said that this was a matter of when, not if.”
Now check out which TV shows we can't wait for in 2021:
No other information has been given about a sequel to Contagion, but we expect it will be a huge hit if and when it does eventually arrive.
