What is International Women's Day?

IWD is a day to celebrate women and girls all over the world.

Although it isn't know exactly when it started its roots can be traced back to 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights.

On the 28th February 1909 the first National Women's Day was celebrated in the US, however it wasn't until the following year that Clara Zetkin from Germany suggested having an International Women's Day. Clara was the leader of the ‘women’s office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany and suggested that we should celebrate women on one day every year to push for their demands.

After celebrating IWD on 19th March for two years the date was then moved to 8th March in 1913 which has been celebrated ever since.

However, it wasn't until 1975 that the United Nations recognised the celebration. They now give the occasion a theme each year, with this year's theme 'Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality'.

Previous themes have included 'Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!' (2015) and 'Equality for Women is Progress for All' (2014).
