The show is making a comeback

Earlier in the week it was announced that popular 90's game show The Crystal Maze would be making a comeback to our TV screens and now Stephen Merchant had been lined up to host the show.

Despite previous rumours suggesting that David Tennant would get the job, Stephen will present the show when it returns to Channel 4 in October. The actor is best known for his roles in The Office, An Idiot Abroad and Extras.

The problem solving game show will return for a one-off special as part of Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser next month.

Speaking about his new role, Stephen said "As a huge fan of the original series, I'm honoured to support Stand Up To Cancer by hosting this one-off edition of The Crystal Maze."

After the announcement was made, Channel 4's head of events added "We wanted something extra special for the Stand Up To Cancer campaign this year, so we're delighted that Crystal Maze will be returning for a celebrity one-off. In Stephen Merchant we have the perfect host, he is our dream booking for this show."

The one-off special will be the first time the programme has aired on Channel 4 in 21 years after making its debut in 1990. The show was hugely popular throughout the 90's before it finally went off air in 1995.

Contestants took part in challenges to win time crystals in order to gain time inside of ‘The Crystal Dome’ for the final challenge.

Channel 4 have not yet revealed which celebrities will take part in the celebrity special but we can't wait to see it.
