Phillip Schofield has explained the decision to air This Morning as the world is rocked by news of a terror attack in Brussels.

The host explained that the programme would run as 'an alternative to the horrific news', though ITV bosses cancelled The Jeremy Kyle Show earlier in the morning.

This had been met with complaints from viewers who wanted an 'escape' from the news.

Phillip said: "We had many discussions this morning about how to continue what do we do with the rest of the show with very little other information.

"We thought the best thing to do would be to continue with the show as an alternative to the horrific news that we're waking up to this morning. That's what we've chosen to do."

This Morning interviewed security experts, one of whom said it would be a good time to visit other capital cities as they're on high alert, while another encouraged travellers to be extra vigilant for others in the future.

Expert Sally Leivesley added: "Protection is through the travellers themselves. It's what you're noticing, if I see a suspicious person I'm going to put my hand up and report it."

Another blast at a Metro station near the EU building followed, killing 20 and injuring more than 50 people.
