They're a staple on our TV screens, rising to fame on Byker Grove over 20 years ago, then fronting some of the biggest prime-time shows, including Britains Got Talent, I'm A Celebrity, and Saturday Night Takeaway. But Ant and Dec have admitted they briefly split up, after Ant McPartlin went into rehab.

The TV presenter was convicted of drink driving in April 2018, following a turbulent few months after his marriage to Lisa Armstrong broke down. The pair announced their divorce in January of the same year.

According the Daily Mirror, Declan Donnelly has written in their new autobiography, Once Upon A Tyne, that the duo's relationship was on "autopilot", adding, “There was a real chance we were never going to work together again. Not knowing if Ant and Dec would continue was very scary for us both.

“Since 1990 we’ve made every decision together for the sake of Ant and Dec. Every discussion we’ve ever had has been ‘what are we going to do? What’s best for us?’

“And now suddenly, we had to think about ourselves as individuals. ‘What do I want to do? What’s best for me?’. That felt like an alien mindset to adopt and it was very frightening.”

Despite having tough competition from the likes of Alison Hammond, Bradley Walsh, Stacey Solomon and Claudia Winkleman, Ant and Dec once again won Best Presenter at the 2024 National Television Awards, making it 23 years in a row!

Dec goes on to confess, “Looking back, when we went into DNA, our relationship wasn’t where it should have been. We were on autopilot, working too hard and taking each other for granted, but Ant’s break forced us both to evaluate everything, almost from the perspective of an outsider.

“It was something we really took time over. We both spoke to lots of people, friends and family, and we both individually came to the conclusion that we wanted to keep working together. A break helped us realise how much we love what we do, and ultimately how much we love each other.”

And Ant, who is now in a relationship with his former personal assistant Anne-Marie Corbett, also revealed how he was feeling during the dark times, admitting he felt guilty for the pressure he put his best friend under.

He said, “There were times in my recovery when I wasn’t sure I’d work again, or if I’d get to work with Dec, if we’d ever get to be Ant and Dec again. That sounds crazy now, but at the time it weighed heavily on my mind, because, at first, my prime focus had to be on getting myself well.”

Their candid confessions come after Dec revealed in their DNA documentary he was "hurt" that Ant didn't confide in him about his issues.

In the documentary itself, Dec opened up about the impact that Ant's struggles has had on him - something he's not really done since it happened, "It has been a tough couple of years and it has tested the bond we have shared since we were 13 years old."

Admitting he'd been really 'hurt' by his friend, Dec continued, "I was incredibly angry at the start, so angry. Disappointed that he didn’t ever come to me and say, 'I am struggling, I need you', because that is what I would do if the shoe was on the other foot. He never came to me and that hurt me a lot."

He also revealed that he thought it might have finished their careers, "There was a point where I thought that that was it. There were times where I wasn’t sure it was going to survive. Times where you didn’t know it needed to survive or you wanted it to survive."

Well we're glad the presenting duo are still going strong!
