WATCH: 'I only wanted to play for Coleraine' ex Rangers star Shiels on signing for the Bannsiders
Former NI international is guest on our latest BetMcLean Football Show
Former Northern Ireland and Rangers star, Dean Shiels is loving life at Coleraine.
The 33-year-old joined the Bannsiders just a month ago from Derry City.
He said there was only one club he was interested in signing for.
“I am very familiar with the club – very familiar surroundings so I am really enjoying it so far,” he said.
“It was always Coleraine I wanted to play for – I told Rodney (McAree) that, I told Colin McKendry (Coleraine chairman) that straightaway
“Although I did speak with other clubs it was always them I wanted to go to.”
He was speaking during our latest BetMcLean Football Show (in partnership with NIFL) which is now available to view on Cool FM’s Facebook page (see link below) and to download as a podcast.
Shiels gives a real insight into his long career – with highlights playing for Rangers in an Old Firm game and for Northern Ireland.
He also speaks about his dad, Kenny – the former Kilmarnock and Derry City boss – and reveals he is a very different character when he is not involved in the game.
“My dad is an intense guy and anyone who works with him will tell you that,” he says.
“He gets up at 5 in the morning every day – all he wants to do is concentrate in football.
“When he is in a job he gives everything to that job – his heart and soul goes into it.
“But when he is at home with his grandchildren he is a different character – he is more relaxed.”

His side are the lowest rank team left in the Irish Cup - they take on Warrenpoint in the quarter finals.
