Ulster's Will Addison has had surgery on a lower leg fracture, sustained in his side's United Rugby Championship win over Emirates Lions.

Head Coach Dan McFarland said the operation went well and that the 29 year old was now recuperating.

He said it was too early to say when Addison, who has five caps for Ireland, would return to action but it is likely the back will be sidelined for a number of weeks.

Addison who was stretchered off after 46 minutes into the game last Friday, missed most of last season with injury.

McFarland said that with the number of injuries Ulster have had overall this season, it has been a chance for others to step up.

"Look, there is always opportunity in injuries - and I've spoken about that before - and it is opportunities for guys who probably would have played in this section of the season anyway but maybe played a little more than they would have done."

The coach also gave an update on skipper Iain Henderson.

"On Hendy - he's making his way back from his operation on his hand - so we will see how that progresses," he said. "He's close."

Ulster are away to Connacht on Saturday as they seek a fifth consecutive win this season.
