Ulster hooker Rob Herring says he's ready to finally take his chance and impress for Ireland when he starts against Scotland this weekend.
Since making his international debut in 2014, the South African-born hooker has only collected seven caps, and has never previously made the match-day squad for a Six Nations fixture.
The 29-year-old was often third or fourth choice for Joe Schmidt, and overshadowed by Rory Best at provincial level.
However, the retirement of the iconic captain, and the departure of Schmidt, means Herring has the early opportunity to become first choice hooker under new Head Coach Andy Farrell.
"I think this might be my fourth campaign, and I haven't managed to get on the pitch. It's something I've been working towards for a long time now and something I've dreamt about. To be given the opportunity is pretty special and I've just got to cherish it now and take my chance," said Herring.
The retirement of Best has also allowed Herring to play a pivotal role in Ulster's impressive form this season, both domestically and in the European Champions Cup. Herring has also been told it was his reduced role for the province that once held back his international development.
"That was one of the reasons I was given about why I didn't get much game time in the 6 Nations. But I've really enjoyed the season so far with Ulster, I'm enjoying the rugby up there, so hopefully I can take that form into this weekend," said Herring.
The front rower has never featured in the competition, but remains confident he can hit the ground running and help Ireland to kick off 2020 with a win over Scotland.
"Obviously the Six Nations is a massive tournament, and we're playing at home this week. Any time you put on the Irish jersey there's pressure and expectation to perform."
