Ulster 23-22 Benetton
Ulster's most-capped player Andrew Trimble came off the bench to score a late try as the province avoided a scare and secured a narrow win over Benetton.
The Italians were in control for long periods of the game, despite having their warm-up disrupted by their bus being involved in a minor crash.
The unerring boot of Tomasso Allan kept things ticking over in the first half, as he punished sloppy Ulster defending with a series of perfect penalties. Despite this domination, it was the home side who were in control at the break.
An 18th minute piece of improvised skill by John Cooney released Tommy Bowe to score a try in the corner, and the scrum half nailed to kick to add to his brace of penalties.
However, the visitors remained comfortable, and went ahead again early in the 2nd half.
Ulster's Paul Marshall came on to make his 200th appearance, but it was his error which led to a try for Benetton.
His attempted kick clear had too much elevation, which allowed the Italians to recover, and Barbieri powered in from 20 yards in the 57th minute.
The fixture appeared to be slipping away from Ulster when Banks nailed a late penalty which appeared to send the visitors clear.
However, Ulster rallied and it was Trimble who smashed over from close range with 2 minutes to go to spare their blushes, and allow Lealiifano to kick a decisive conversion and win the game by a single point
