Rory McIlroy could reclaim his World No 1 ranking this week.

The Holywood man who is currently No 3 returns to action at the WGC Mexico Championship today.

He has not played competitively since injuring a rib at the South African Open in January.

But McIlroy said he felt “probably stronger now” than he was at the end of last year.

Significantly, he can take back the No 1 ranking if he wins at the Club de Golf Chapultepec and Dustin Johnston finishes in a two-way tie for third or worse.

McIlroy said he is glad just to be in the mix for again for titles.

“It would be nice to get on a run like I did in 14 and separate myself from the rest of the guys but I am sure all the guys are thinking the same thing,” he said.

“It’s nice to have a chance – it’s nice to be in the conversation at least. I know that if I play the weeks that I play I’ll have a chance to get back there."
