The Republic secured a goalless draw in the first leg of their World Cup Qualifying playoff in Copenhagen.

If both sides fail to score on Tuesday night, then the game will go to extra time.

"You have to try and cover all eventualities," he said.

"However, the moment a goal is scored in the game, that eradicates a lot of things.

"It eradicates extra time and penalty kicks, so we're going to try and score a goal."

There was some bad news on the eve of the tie, as it was confirmed former ROI international Liam Miller is getting treatment for pancreatic cancer.

O'Neill said the thoughts of the squad and management were with him.

"I gave him his debut as well too, as a kid at Celtic," he said.

"He played wonderfully well in a Champions League game, he was absolutely outstanding.

"I'd heard about it just recently but I didn't know how bad it was.

"All thoughts go out to him and his family and it puts things in perspective anyway."
