McIlroy claims third spot in Abu Dhabi Championship
"Positive signs" in big comeback tournament
Rory McIlroy came close to pulling off a memorable win in his big comeback tournament in Abu Dhabi.
But the World Number 11, playing competitively for the first time since taking a break in October, had to settle for joint third with Matthew Fitzpatrick – finishing the championship with a fine 70.
Tommy Fleetwood re-claimed his title on -22.
McIlroy says he could not have done much more on the day and was delighted with his performance after an injury-plagued and winless season.
“My game's in really good shape and I saw some positive signs, so I'm looking forward to next week in Dubai and the rest of the season,'' McIlroy said.
“I've no doubt that if I can play next week as I have done this week then I will have a good chance. It's been a huge success for me this week, even if I didn't win. I've got a lot out of it and I'm excited to get at it next week.'
