Glentoran's John McGuigan slipped as he took a last minute penalty, sending his effort over the bar as his side drew 0-0 with Coleraine at the Oval.

The Bannsiders had barely settled in the game before Brad Lyons went off injured in the 16th minute, replaced by Ian Parkhill.

The forced replacement meant the visiting midfielders were struggling to find their rhythm in the early phases - a task that became much more difficult after they were suddenly reduced to 10 men.

Josh Carson was sent off, shown a straight red card in the 20th minute for a needless 2-footed lunge on Marcus Kane.

Glentoran failed to make the most of their advantage, and Curtis Allen's volley wide on the half-hour was perhaps their best opening of the first half.

Despite the numerical disparity, Coleraine had a decent chance as the ball dropped kindly in the box for Parkhill in the 31st minute, but after controlling it with his thigh he struck a volley wide of Elliott Morris' post.

Coleraine's Jamie McGonigle then drew a smart save from Morris in the opening minute of the 2nd half, firing low from the right side of the box. It rebounded into the path of Darren McAuley on the far side, but he dragged his effort harmlessly wide.

At the other end, Coleraine goalkeeper Chris Johns was suddenly called into action, pulling off a superb flying save to palm away a header from Robbie McDaid with 52 minutes on the clock.

8 minutes later, McGonigle went close again. This time the Bannsiders' attacker flicked the ball up just outside the box, and swivled before firing a volley that drew a diving save from Morris.

The Glens keeper was called on again in the 63rd minute to tip away a 25 yard drive from Parkhill. 60 seconds later, Coleraine stopper Johns had to get down smartly to save a driven shot from McDaid.

With 76 minutes played Coleraine were unlucky not to take the lead. McGonigle's through ball caught the Glens defence cold and allowed Ciaron Harkin to surge into space before lashing a shot against the post from 25 yards.

The Glens had another lucky escape in the 86th minute when Eoin Bradley's left footed shot was headed off the line by Nathan Kerr.

Glentoran were awarded a penalty after Ogilby barged down Allen in the box, but McGuigan lost his footing and spooned his shot over the bar.
