First win for NI Futsal team
Jonny Michael's squad celebrating after victory in San Marino
Northern Ireland’s futsal team have won their first international.
They beat San Marino 1-0 last night in the second of two friendlies at the Multiventi Sports Domus.
After narrowly losing the first game on Saturday, Northern Ireland were determined to make amends.
They pushed an experienced San Marino side from the start and were soon rewarded with their goal.
And it could have been more.
Jonny Michael’s side pressed further, hitting the post and having a couple of shots saved.
San Marino hit back with a series of attacks but some fine defending including a raft of superb saves from keeper Philip Irvine kept the scoreline at 1-0.
Speaking to Downtown & Cool FM after the game, Michael was full of praise for his players.
“It feels great – I am delighted for the boy, the backroom team and the Association,” he said.
“We are just starting out – we are only six or seven months in – so to get that first win is hopefully the catalyst to step up to the next level.
“We were disappointed with the first game which we dominated in large parts.
“The boys defended incredibly well – it was a real professional performance from us.”
The International scene now takes a break for a few months while the futsal league gets under way across Northern Ireland.
After this the squad will take part in a training camp before playing a few more international games.
