Daniel Wiffen: Co Down swimmer sets new world record
The 22 year old won the 800m freestyle event at the European Short Course Championships
County Down swimmer Daniel Wiffen has broken the 800m freestyle world record - and bagged a third gold medal at the European Short Course Championships in Romania.
The 22 year old from Magheralin won the final in a time of 7:20.46
That was three seconds quicker than Grant Hackett's 2008 time of 7:23.42 and 20 seconds quicker than the gold medal winning time at the Tokyo Olympics.
Wiffen added the 800m title to the 1500m and 400m freestyle crowns he secured earlier in the week.
He said it felt "amazing" to break a record that had stood for 15 years.
