Northern Ireland Women’s football boss, Alfie Wylie, has predicted a bright future for the game here.
And he believes the Danske Bank Premiership which kicks off a new season tomorrow (Wed) could be one of the best ever.
“Derry City is in it, Portadown is there for the first time - so it is a very new fresh league, if you like, with the injection of new clubs and other clubs hungry for success,” he said.
Wylie is a guest on our latest BetMcLean Football show – a Women’s game special – available to view now on Cool FM’s Facebook page (see below).
He says the game’s decision makers are doing a good job in developing the sport across Northern Ireland.
“There has been loads of investment through all the countries over the last number of years – the IFA is working very, very hard – we have a very good league here, NIFL has taken on a good league and we have very good structures in place,” he added.
On his role with Northern Ireland, Wylie says he is proud to be at the helm.
“You are the coach of your country – you can’t get higher than that – the players are playing for your country, you can’t get higher than that,” he said.
“The motivation? It is difficult and challenging but why wouldn’t you want to do it?”
He is joined on this week’s show by Crusaders player Danielle McDowell and NI captain, Marissa Callaghan, who also stars for Cliftonville.
The Reds’ midfielders said: “The league has developed a lot – more players are getting involved particularly in the younger age groups.
“All of the clubs are now starting to promote development and get younger players in so that’s only going to help in the long run.
“I think all of the teams this year have strengthened with new signings so we will see how it pans out after the first week.”
Meanwhile, reigning champions Linfield Ladies – bidding to win their third consecutive title – start their campaign away to Derry City.
Cliftonville travel to Portadown who are making their league debut while the Crues are away to Linfield.
