City bring in former NI international as Assistant Manager
Former Northern Ireland international midfielder Michael O'Connor has been announced as the new Assistant Manager at Newry City AFC.
The 35-year-old arrives from Newry's Premiership rivals Glenavon, having racked up over 400 appearances in English professional football as well as 11 senior caps for his country.
O'Connor, who co-managed Integrated College Dungannon to their Danske Bank Schools Cup win earlier this year, steps into the role at The Showgrounds after previous Assistant Gary Boyle was promoted the Manager's role following the departure of club legend Darren Mullen.
Boyle, who has already signed Ciaran O'Connor, Adam Salley and Barney McKeown, since taking over, said: “Michael comes in to complete the back-room staff as assistant manager along with existing coaches Damien Hillen, Damian McCorry and Mickey Keenan.
"Michael has had a hugely distinguished and successful playing career thus far and is another massive addition for the club.
"Having completed my badges with Michael I have seen his work first hand and I know he will be a terrific fit for the club. I am delighted and really excited to be working with him.”
O'Connor, who takes on his maiden senior backroom staff role and will also be registered as a player with City, added: “I'm really looking forward to working with Gary, the existing coaches and the team. This will be my first year involved in the coaching side but it’s something that I have been looking to do for last year or two.
"It will be a big challenge for myself and Gary to replicate the job Darren has done for last 10 years but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to. I would like to thank Gary as well for giving me this opportunity to work with him at a great club.”
