Gusts are expected to reach up to '50-80 mph' 🌧💨
Last updated 28th Jan 2022
According to the Met Office, this weekend is set to be a windy one! Storm Malik will impact northern areas of the UK on Saturday, bringing high winds for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England.
A yellow weather warning has been issued for all counties in Northern Ireland, from 4am to 3pm on Saturday 29th January.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen said, “The impacts of Storm Malik are going to be greatest in Denmark on Sunday, but the track of the storm in the preceding hours means that the UK will be dealt a glancing blow as Malik moves eastwards on Saturday.
As things start to settle down on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, things will pick back up again in the afternoon.
Another yellow weather warning has been issued from 6pm on Sunday 30th, to Monday 31st at 12pm.
Strong winds on Sunday will likely cause some travel disruption and generate some large and dangerous waves around the coasts.
Counties Antrim, Down and Londonderry will be affected most, the strongest gusts will mostly occur around the coastlines and over the hills, with many of these exposed locations expected to see gusts reach 50-60 mph for a time.
There's a small chance winds could reach 60-70mph inland, and 70-80mph around exposed coasts and hills, for a short time only.
What to expect
- Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some roads and bridges may close
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto susceptible sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
