Met Office confirms amber wind warning is in place for Storm Franklin

After another windy weekend with Storms Dudley and Eunice, it looks like we need to bring in the bins once again.

The Met Office has issued another wind warning as a swathe of very strong winds will reach Northern Ireland later Sunday evening in association with Storm Franklin.

Northern areas of Northern Ireland are covered by an amber wind warning that will be in force from early Monday morning. Within the amber warning area, winds could be in excess of 80mph in exposed coastal areas, but more widely between 60 and 70mph.

The wind warning comes into affect from 12pm Sunday 20th to 1pm Monday 21st February.

What to expect:

• Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen, along with trees/branches being brought down

• Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible

• Some roads and bridges may close

• Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

• Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

Today: Cloudy with showers or longer outbreaks of rain this morning, heavy at times. Some bright spells and blustery showers this afternoon, the showers turning wintry with snow on the hills. Fresh to strong westerly winds with coastal gales. Maximum temperature 10 °C

Tonight: Very windy with gales or severe gales, gusts of 70mph or more around the north coast and 50 to 60mph inland. Showers or longer outbreaks of rain, wintry at first Minimum temperature 2 °C

Monday: Mainly dry and bright with some sunny spells, although the odd shower possible in the morning. Chilly northwest winds, these easing during the day. Maximum temperature 8 °C

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Rain soon clearing to showers on Tuesday, the showers wintry over the hills. Windy with rain pushing east on Wednesday. Cold and windy on Thursday with frequent wintry showers
