Northern Ireland experienced its first real taste of winter this week as temperatures plummeted across the country, bringing with it a mixture of sleet, snow and icy conditions.

According to forecasters we might not out be out of the woods just yet - a mild weekend will bring some relief before further wintry weather sweeps in.

There is potential for things to turn even colder next week, as northerly winds develop drawing bitterly cold air from the arctic.

According to the Met Office; "Strong winds and heavy rain will move south-east wards on Saturday, followed by colder, brighter and windy weather with wintry showers into Sunday. Strong winds coupled with a band of rain and hill snow will move eastwards on Monday."

With night time temperatures expected to fall below zero, drivers will have to brace themselves for frost in the mornings - worth stocking up on de-icer.

There is still some uncertainty in the long-range forecast, but the Met Office are predicting the current cold snap to last through much of February.

"There is an increased chance of seeing very cold conditions developing in February with a greater probability of northeasterly or easterly winds. This will bring an increased risk of widespread, perhaps severe frosts as well as snow, especially in eastern areas."

Unfortunately no end to the wintry weather in sight. We have had it so good recently, it had to turn cold at some point.
