Met Office warning as tail end of Hurricane Ophelia set to hit Northern Ireland

The Met Office is forecasting a spell of potentially disruptive windy weather for the beginning of next week.

Hurricane Ophelia, the tenth storm of the season is currently picking up speed as it crosses the Atlantic and Northern Ireland is expected to feel the full effects of it.

Although Ophelia will lose its hurricane status by the time it reaches us, it is expected to have a big influence on the weather here.

Batten down the hatches as heavy rain and severe gale force winds are expected from late-Sunday onward.

Here's the latest advice in the forecast:

The Met Office has issued an early Yellow Warning valid from 0800 to 2300 Monday for damaging gusts of between 70 to 80mph in exposed parts of the country.

Delays and disruption to public transport is expected. There is a chance of damage to buildings such as tiles from roofs and disruption to power supplies. Sea fronts will be affected by spray, large waves and there is potential for coastal flooding.

The worst of the storm is expected to hit during Monday's commute to work.
