As the snow continues to fall, it is set to cause widespread disruption for many.

We are in for more sub-zero temperatures, gale-force icy winds and blizzard-like conditions - as Storm Emma sweeps in from the Atlantic.

Around 250 schools were forced to close today, a number of flights have been cancelled and some treacherous driving conditions have been reported.

The Met Office have extended their AMBER warning for parts of counties Antrim, Armagh and Down, until 10:00 Friday.

A further 5-10cm of fresh snow is expected quite widely overnight. Strong winds will lead to drifting and severe wind chill. Southeastern areas are expected to see the greatest falls.

Storm Emma : Advice, numbers and websites you may need

Storm Emma has already hit the south west of the UK and Ireland. As it tracks north this evening, it is likely to lead to further disruptive snowfall across parts of Down and Armagh by dawn.

"Delays and cancellations to all forms of transport are likely. Roads may become blocked by deep snow and some rural communities might become cut off. Interruptions to power supplies and other services such as telephone and mobile phone networks, could also occur."

Worth keeping an eye on as warnings are subject to change - we are not out of the woods just yet.

Tonight

Mainly cloudy with further snow showers, mostly across southern counties. Some longer spells of prolonged snow likely across Down and Armagh.

Minimum temperature -4 °C.

Friday

More heavy snow showers in the morning, mainly in the south, but easing through the day.

Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday

Easterly winds continuing to bring some isolated wintry showers. However on Sunday a band of rain and snow will spread from the south for a time.111
