Army bomb experts were dispatched to a burning car on the outskirts of Bangor early today.

There had been some confusion over how the fire started.

Initial reports suggested the vehicle belonged to a former woman police officer and had burst into flames as the result of a suspected booby trap bomb.

But in a statement released just before 2pm, the PSNI said: "Police can confirm that a mechanical fault is believed to be the cause of a car fire on A2 between Belfast and Bangor this morning."

An ATO was sent to the Ballyrobert area of the A2 between Bangor and Belfast shortly before 8.30am.

Emergency services were also at the scene.

It is understood the woman driving the car was not injured.

Police originally said the ATO had been tasked to conduct an examination of the car after their initial inquiries at the scene.

The normally busy road remains closed in both directions at the moment but is due to open shortly.
