Walker critical after 50m fall

A man is in a critical condition after falling in the Mournes.

He was found at the base of the Water Slabs area close to Slieve Binnion in the Annalong Valley at around 4.30pm on Monday.

It is believed he could have fallen up to 50 metres.

The Mourne Mountain Rescue team says he was was assessed and treated for multiple injuries including to the head, neck and chest.

Due to the nature of the injuries a helicopter evacuation was requested. Rescue 116 responded from Dublin and airlifted the man to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

A total of 18 members of the Mountain Rescue Team responded to the emergency and stood down at 2105hrs.
