The UK is to provide an extra £1billion of military support to Ukraine, according to PM Boris Johnson.

It will go towards new weapons like sophisticated air defence systems, drones, innovative new electronic warfare equipment and thousands of pieces of vital kit for Ukrainian soldiers.

It brings the total UK military support since the outbreak of war to £2.3 billion – more than any country other than the United States.

Meanwhile in Ireland, 500 modular homes are to be installed in around 20 sites across Ireland to help efforts to house Ukrainian refugees.

The two-bedroom units provided under a 100 million euro Government pilot initiative will be able to accommodate 2,000 people.

It is expected that the first of the units will be in place by November.

The armed struggle continues in the country as Russian forces are battling to surround the Ukrainian military's last stronghold in a long-contested eastern province.

Moscow's battle to wrest the entire Donbas region from Ukraine saw Russian forces pushing toward two villages south of Lysychansk while Ukrainian troops fought to prevent their encirclement.

The UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) said Russian forces were making "incremental advances" in their offensive to capture Lysychansk, the last city in the Luhansk province under Ukrainian control following the retreat of Ukraine's forces from the neighbouring city of Sievierodonetsk.
