NI wakes up to sub-zero temperatures as cold snap hits

A yellow weather warning for ice and snow across Northern Ireland has been extended until midday tomorrow (Wed).

It had originally been expected to be lifted at midday today.

The Met Office says some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus, and train services.

It’s also advising pedestrians to be cautious of sustaining injuries due to slips and falls on icy surfaces, and to expect some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.

The North West has been hit by heavy snowfall overnight.

Police are urging drivers in the Derry City and Strabane area to keep a safe distance, after almost 20 reported collisions since 5pm yesterday.

A statement from Department for Infrastructure Roads Service this morning says, “Temperatures are currently sub zero and there is a risk of Snow (mainly in the North West of the province) and ice on roads.”

“Salting of roads on the scheduled network has been undertaken overnight.”

“ All main routes on the scheduled road network are open and passable with care. Road users are advised to exercise caution when travelling, particularly when driving on untreated roads.”

Derry City and Strabane District Council has also warned of possible disruption to a number of services today as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

A statement said, "Council anticipates some disruption to its bin collection services and is advising residents to leave their bin out for collection as normal, however for those whose bins is not emptied today please be advised that it will be emptied as conditions improve later in the week. "

"This is in the interest of health and safety for both our crews and the general public. "

"The public are also advised that all Council cemeteries will be closed to the public today with the exception to facilitate burials which will go ahead as normal. "

"Council recycling centres and parks will be opened when it is safe to do so. "

The cold snap is also affecting the rest of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
