A lorry has hit the Old Railway Bridge on the B170 Ballysallagh Road in Bangor.

The road is closed in both directions and local diversions are in place.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

In a statement the Department for Infrastructure said:

"Following initial inspection of the damage to the bridge this road will be closed for a period of time.

"This is a commuter road between Bangor and Dundonald / Craigantlet so road users should be aware of the closure.

"They are also advised to allow extra travel time due to increased traffic on the A2 and other commuter routes in this area.

"The full extent of the damage will require assessment by a Structural Engineer in daylight."

The same bridge has been struck a number of times in recent years and has already had numerous repairs carried out.
