A top Doctor with the Pubic Health Agency says there’s "no need" to impose a local lockdown in Limavady.

A cluster of Covid-19 cases has been identified there among people who went to a social gathering at a house.

Testing and contact tracing is underway to establish who all has been affected.

Speaking to Downtown/Cool FM News, Dr Gerry Waldron from the PHA said,

“There’s no question of us needing to institute a local lockdown in respect of this incident.”

“We have identified at a very early stage that it is entirely due to a very specific event.”

“We’ve taken immediate action and are heading to identify everyone associated.”

In a statement the PHA said,

“The Public Health Agency has identified a cluster of Covid-19 cases in the Limavady area.”

“At present we can link the cases to a social gathering in a private/residential setting.”

“Testing and contact tracing is being conducted to identify people who may be potentially affected to help prevent any further spread.”

“With lockdown restrictions being eased, this type of occurrence is to be expected, which is why the Test, Trace and Protect programme is in place.''

We will not comment on individual cases as this could lead to people being identified and deter others with symptoms coming forward to be tested.”

We would ask everyone to be mindful of this risk.”

This virus has the potential to make its presence felt in any district.”

Everyone should act on the basis that it might potentially be in their neighbourhood right now.”

That's why following the public health advice on regular hand washing and maintaining a social distance of two metres remains vitally important.''
