Figures for deaths linked to Covid-19 have now reached 2,355 according to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.

A further 150 deaths involving the virus occurred in the week from January 16 – 22.

This is the second highest weekly number since the pandemic began.

Of this total 1,487 (63.1%) took place in hospital, 687 (29.2%) in care homes, 13 (0.6%) in hospices and 168 (7.1%) at residential addresses or other locations.

There were 700 deaths in 166 care homes and hospices.

While the departmental death toll is reported on a daily basis the statistics agency reports its Covid-19 data with a week lag.

The NISRA figures are based on the information entered on death certificates, completed by medical professionals.

They may or may not have previously tested positive for the virus.

However, the Department of Health’s figures are based on patients having previously tested positive for the virus.

Its total number of deaths now stands at 1,792 which is 563 less than NISRA’s.

Yesterday (Thursday) the daily dashboard showed a further 13 people died after contracting the virus.

A further 592 people tested positive from 2,992 individual tests.

While, 768 hospital inpatients currently have Covid, and there are 38 available ICU beds at present.
